Application of gold leaf
The history and details of the gilding craft
It takes five years to become a gild master.
Gold beating – creation of gold leaf from a gold bar
Gold beating is an ancient process of turning gold into sheets less than a wavelength of light in thickness. Egyptians were already doing it 5000 years ago. To this day, gold leaf is used whenever top quality gilding is required. Before the beating begins, a small gold bar is rolled into a sheet of gold 1/1000 inch thin. During the next 12 hours, through the use of mechanical and manual hammering, this sheet will be reduced to only 1/250,000 inch in thickness. One small gold bar will yield 9000 square feet of gold leaf. The leaf becomes extremely fragile at the final stages of hammering. Only skilled craftsmen with many years of experience are qualified to perform the final stages of hammering. Rothschild portrait frames are gilded with gold leaf imported from Germany and Italy.
